About Tacoma, Washington

Tacoma is the third largest city in the state of Washington and is located on the shores of beautiful Commencement Bay and at the foot of Mt. Rainier.  It is an international trade and shipping center is a member of the World Trade Center and now has 11 sister cities throughout the world.

Points of interest include the Chihuly Bridge of Glass and Museum of Glass, the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts, Point Defiance Zoo and Park, the Tacoma Dome, Fort Nisqually, Union Station, Pantages Theater, Tacoma Mall and much more.

The architectural history of Tacoma is rich and includes buildings dating back to 1870’s. Many Victorian and Craftsman style homes can be seen throughout Tacoma.   Tacoma’s historic districts include:  Union Depot/Warehouse District, North Slope Historic District, Stadium/Seminary Historic District, Salmon Beach Historic District, Old City Hall Historic District, and the Wedge Neighborhood Historic District.  Many of these districts have views of Commencement Bay and Mount Rainier.

Tacoma has eight neighborhood councils.  These neighborhood councils allow the city to keep in touch with the needs of those in the community.  The councils are made up of: Northeast Tacoma, the West End, North End, New Tacoma, Central Tacoma, South Tacoma, East-side Tacoma, and the South End.

The City of Tacoma operates as a community based team.  This approach allows the community and the city officials to communicate by setting priorities together, work together and to share progress together.  City residents are encouraged to keep their neighborhoods clean and safe so that all residents and visitors can enjoy the beauty surrounding them.

Education of residents, from grade school through graduate school, is important to Tacoma’s progressive community growth and enhancement.  Tacoma has many private and public educational schools which are located throughout the various neighborhood communities.

Tacoma also has a number of colleges and universities available to the spouses of Lewis-McChord:  Tacoma Community College (offers two year programs), Bates Technical College (offers two year programs), Pacific Lutheran University (a private university which offers four year and above programs), University of Puget Sound (private university which offers four year and above programs), University of Washington-Tacoma (also offering four year programs and above), Business Computer Training Institution (private, two year program), BJ’s Beauty and Barber College (private two year program), and Northwest Baptist Seminary (a private seminary offering four year and above programs).
