About Steilacoom, Washington

The historic Town of Steilacoom sits along the beautiful Puget Sound and is part of Pierce County, Washington.  It is the oldest town (incorporated in 1854) in Washington.  Steilacoom is a 13 minute drive from Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Steilacoom is a quaint bedroom community.  The 2010 census puts the population at 6,049.  The median income for a family is about $54,700.

The school system is part of the Steilacoom Historic School District #1 is one of the oldest districts in the state of Washington being formed in 1854.  The District is currently located at 510 Chambers.  The phone numbers are 253 983-2200 - 253 584-7198 and the fax is 253 983-2239 (fax).  Steilacoom School District is one of seven schools districts nationally to participate with Military Child Education Coalition. This is a national pilot program that is funded by the Army.  The Steilacoom School District is comprised of about 2,900 students from Pre-K through 12th grade.  There are five grade schools:   Cherrydale Primary School (Pre K-3), Chloe Clark Elementary (Pre K-3), Saltar's Point Elementary (4-5); one middle school:  Pioneer Middle School (6-8); and one senior school:  Steilacoom High School (9-12).  There is also one elementary located on Anderson Island (K-5).  The mission statement of the Steilacoom Historic School District No. 1 is to “educate and prepare responsible citizens who can contribute and adapt in a changing world.” 

The Steilacoom Community Center offers a wide variety of recreational and community activities to their citizens that include adult and youth programs as well as offers community services.  The Center is located at 2301 Worthington Street.  It is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and it is closed on Saturday and Sunday.    Events include the Apple Squeeze, Farmers Market, Concerts in the Park, Salmon Bake, a town wide garage sale,  the Red Ribbon Bazaar at Christmas time as well as several other community activities throughout the year. Steilacoom has 12 parks that are open dawn to dusk.  Several of these parks include beautiful vistas of the Puget Sound.  Several of these park amenities include a band stand, playground equipment, walking trails and picnic areas. Great shopping adventures for the whole family can be done in University Place, the Tacoma Mall and the Lakewood Mall as well as Seattle and Olympia, Washington.
