About Des Moines, Washington

Des Moines is located in King Country, Washington, about half-way between Seattle and Tacoma.  Des Moines is also about two miles from Sea-Tac International Airport along the beautiful east shore of Puget Sound.   This city is focused on providing residents and visitors an excellent lifestyle opportunity by providing a great shopping mall, quality homes, and excellent parks, and beaches.

The current population of DesMoines is about 30,000 with median family income of about $60,000.  The current housing price for this area is $196,000.00.  While Des Moines a lovely community to live it, it is located 29 miles or about a 45 minute commute to Joint Base Lewis-McChord.  

The Des Moines school system is run by Highline Public Schools which offers “A path to success for every student.”  The  headquarters are located at 15675 Ambaum Blvd S. W., Burien, WA  98166.  The telephone number is 206 422 0111.  Highline Public Schools has approximately 18,000 students.  This district has a staff of 2000 and services the communities of Des Moines, Normandy Park, Burien, Sea-Tac, White Center, and Boulevard Park with 33 schools. Highline also offers skill sets for career/technical education at several high schools.  The Highline Athletic Department believes proving a good athletic experience enhances learning through sportsmanship, competition, teamwork and integrity.  Athletic participation is encouraged at all  school levels as is parental participation is also highly encouraged at all levels of academia.  There are several private schools available, also. Adult continuing education classes are offered at Highline Community College. 

The City of Des Moines Parks and Recreational Department’s mission statement is “to preserve, protect, improve, and promote the use of Des Moines  parks, greenways and recreational programs for the benefit of all neighbors and citizens.  Des Moines has two community centers:  Brooks Community Center and City of Des Moines Community Center both located at 2100 S E 5th Street, Des Moines.  Ewing Park and Riverwalk Park are both dog friendly parks.  All dogs must be current on their vaccinations and be licensed where they live.  As mentioned above, Des Moines has many beautiful parks and offers great recreational activities for youth and seniors.  Saltwater State Park is located close to Des Moines and is an 88-acre marine camping park.  The park also has hiking and biking trails.  Salt Water Park is alive with vegetation, wildlife, and marine animals.  Camping is available as are picnic tables, two covered kitchen areas and a playground.  Divers love to come to Salt Water park for the underwater reef exploration.
