The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a toll bridge with toll booths. The fee can be up to $5.00 a day or more depending upon the size of the vehicle. A Good to Go Pass is available for those who commute across the bridge on a daily basis. More information about these passes can be obtained at Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).
The city is small covering only 4.4 miles. However, in that very small area, there is a population of 8,753 according to the 2015 census. The median housing price is roughly $300,500. Although the surrounding area offers many housing options to residents. Gig Harbor, the city by the bay, is a very active place for tourists with shopping, dining and recreation on every block. This city has a history of boat building and fishing, much of that has dwindled to one boat builder and most of the fishing fleet taking harvests from Alaska. Tradition dictates, that during the first week of June, Gig Harbor’s fishing fleet gathers in the center of the bay for the annual “Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony.” In recent years, due to the dwindling number of fishing boats, pleasure craft have been allowed to participate in the ceremony. This is a great time to gather family and friends to enjoy the bay, varies eateries and celebrate not only the Blessing of the Fleet but the blessings of life in general.
Gig Harbor has several parks located around the bay including: Jerisich Park and Skansie Brothers Park. These parks are large, open, waterfront space with grass, decks, benches and a covered Pavilion for community events. It is also home to the Fisherman Memorial. The parks are host to fairs and events ranging from the annual holiday tree lighting ceremony, summer concerts and art festivals. There is also a public use moorage dock where boaters can stay, free of charge, for a limited time. The Gig Harbor City Park also offers a variety of activities for families and friend, along with a children’s playground. The park has a baseball diamond, a basketball court as well as tennis courts. And if that was not enough this park also offers classes to the community, one class in particular is a conversation. The variety of accommodations available to residents and visitors makes this park very popular.

The District offers services to 8,600 students, most of which ride the school bus system. There are 16 schools within this district. The eight grade schools include: Artondale Elementary School, Discovery Elementary School, Evergreen Elementary, Harbor Heights Elementary, Minter Elementary School, Purdy Elementary School, Vaugh Elementary School, and Voyager Elementary. Four middle schools: Goodman Middle School, Harbor Ridge Middle School, Key Peninsula Middle School, and Kopachuch Middle School. Two high schools: Gig Harbor High School and Purdy High School. The district also includes Tacoma Community College Fresh Start Program, and one high school alternative school – Henderson Bay Alternative School.
Continuing education can be found at the following colleges and universities: Pacific Lutheran University (Parkland), University of Washington, St. Martin’s University, Tacoma School of the Arts, Clover Park Technical College, Pierce College Fort Steilacoom, Pierce College in Puyallup, Covenant Bible Seminary, and college classes at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
